Cleaning and renovation
Let us at Edurus take care of the old tombstone to give it a new shine. Renovations are often carried out in conjunction with text additions, but if the stone has become mossy and overgrown or if the paint has completely chipped away, we have an experienced team ready to help.
A tombstone that has been in place for an extended period is affected by external factors such as sunlight, precipitation, watering, and other activities in the cemetery. This can lead to fading, discoloration, or mechanical damage. Regular cleaning of the tombstone prevents discoloration, while fading cannot be avoided if the tombstone is exposed to direct sunlight. For stones that have not been regularly maintained, a complete renovation may be appropriate.
Restore the tombstone with a renovation
When renovating a tombstone, we work to restore a finish that is equivalent to what was present at the time of original manufacturing. In addition to thorough cleaning, this involves filling in color or gold in the text and decoration, or re-chiseling finely finished surfaces to restore the contrast with the raised text and decoration.
Renovate the tombstone with re-polishing
We also offer the option to re-polish the tombstone as long as the stone is not too thin for the new treatment of text and decoration. If you are interested in re-polishing the tombstone, please contact us by submitting a form for a quote via the link here. Feel free to attach a picture and measurements of the existing tombstone to help us provide a more accurate assessment.
Professional cleaning of the grave marker
A rough cleaning of the tombstone or frames at the grave can be done using high pressure or special acid cleaning and should be carried out by a professional. Please contact us via the form here or by phone for a cost estimate. Feel free to attach a picture of the tombstone to facilitate the consultation.
Clean the tombstone yourself
Here are general tips to help you care for your tombstone in the best way. We recommend keeping the tombstone clean and washing it as needed for optimal long-lasting protection.”
- Rough surface
Requires more maintenance than a polished surface. A rough-finished tombstone benefits from regular cleaning, ideally once a year, with lukewarm water or a mild detergent with a neutral pH (dilute generously with lukewarm water). A brush can be used to remove any dirt and moss. - Smoothly finished surface
Benefits from regular cleaning to maintain its appearance. Care instructions are the same as for a rough surface. - Matte polished surface
Easier to clean than, for example, a finely chiseled finish. The care recommendations are the same as for a rough and smoothly finished tombstone. - Polished surface
Requires less maintenance and should only be wiped down occasionally. If any dirt needs to be washed away, the care advice is to use plain water and rub with your hand, a soft cloth, or a sponge. Ensure that no sand particles scratch the surface. For heavily soiled surfaces on the tombstone, a mild detergent with a neutral pH can be used in lukewarm water.
Be careful when cleaning
Cleaning of the tombstone should preferably be done in damp weather and during the time of year when there is no risk of frost. A cloth, soft brush, or your hands are your best tools to avoid scratches and damage.
As time goes by, the color and gilding on the stone become increasingly fragile, so be careful when removing dirt that has settled in the indentations of the text and decoration. Clean gently to avoid scraping off the color; you may polish gently with a soft toothbrush.
